It was the butterfly, the embodiment of metamorphosis so dear to the Surrealists, that Elsa Schiaparelli chose as the theme for her 1937 summer collection. She used it for printed dresses and long, open-weave shawls, and set plastic butterflies on jackets and hats. The wardrobe of Wallis Simpson, future Duchess of Windsor, included seventeen ensembles from this collection.
