Madeleine Vionnet; embroidery by Lesage
This dress uses the pattern seen in the famous classical Greek logo that Ernesto Thayaht designed for Madeleine Vionnet in 1919: a woman inscribed within a circle is standing on the capital of an Ionic column and holding up her peplos.
Here the cut involves a virtuoso overlaying of panels using a range of subtle gradations of green. The trompe l'oeil necklaces are a reminder that the 1920s were truly a golden age for embroidery.
