François Kollar (1904-1979)
Published in Harper’s Bazaar in December 1937, this photograph was taken at the Hôtel Meurice in Paris as part of a magazine report on the Duke of Windsor's new bride. The photographer was François Kollar, a specialist in advertising work and portraits of the leading couturiers of the 1930s. Of a rare elegance, Kollar's fashion photography was marked by a carefully considered balance and sometimes resorted to the solarisations and multiple exposures favoured at the time. The Duchess of Windsor is wearing a glen plaid lamé Mainbocher dress with Cartier clips on the bodice. Her bracelets are by Boucheron. The Palais Galliera has some twenty items from the Duchess's wardrobe.
