Martin Margiela
On September 28, 2008, the Martin Margiela spring-summer 2009 show celebrated the brand’s 20th anniversary and its 40th show. The twenty-first model was a coat created by the workshops of the brand’s Artisanale line and was coded “0”. The model who wore it walked for 28 seconds and was 1.78 m tall. A native of Jamaica, she was twenty and her name was Sam Kareen Taylor. But the audience never saw her face. Her brown hair and eyes were covered with a flesh-toned stocking that hid her head. She wore panties covered with tights. Her bust was bare under a pile of wigs in a bleached blond with dark roots. She wore a hairpiece with a shag cut and bangs that covered her forehead.
Martin Margiela cultivated anonymity, which was a brand code. Recruited during “body castings”, the models who walked for the designer were often depersonalized and their identities were erased to highlight the clothing they wear.
