Grands Magasins du Louvre

1872

The "Grands Magasins du Louvre" catalogues are part of the Palais Galliera's trade catalogue collection, which totals some 5,000 volumes. The "Grands Magasins du Louvre" catalogues are the oldest catalogues in this collection as they were published from 1866. The museum collection was partially created when the department store closed for good in 1974 and was enriched thanks to numerous donations: Forney Library, Madame Portzamparc, etc. The engravings imagined by fashion illustrators, some of them famous, form an important part of these catalogues. These catalogues contain text and iconographic information that is valuable for the history of fashion and costumes, as well as for sociology. They bear witness to late 19th- and early 20th-century society, in particular the bourgeoisie.
