Faced with shortages of the basics during the dark days of the Occupation, shoemakers, leather goods makers and milliners showed enormous imagination in appropriating the most surprising materials. Emblematic of the period and of the determination to overcome all the obstacles to creation, this 1942 turban by Jeanne Lanvin is a piece of technical wizardry in straw string. It also testifies to the outlandishness of wartime hats – often a last fashion resort – and to the fondness for the turban among milliners and their clients: extremely practical, especially for cycling, it kept the cold out and concealed hair that could not always be given regular care
