John Galliano
The splendours of Belle Epoque fashion (1898-1908) inspired John Galliano to create his second haute couture collection for Christian Dior in the autumn-winter of 1997-98. Almost a year later, he revisited this period for his own ready-to-wear collection, Autumn-Winter 1998-99 with this sheath dress.
Entirely tight, its bottom of the skirt flares out like a mermaid. His virtuoso puzzle-like pattern is entirely made of crepe patches embroidered with black and white arabesques. To this restrained look is added a whaleboned funnel collar that sets the nape of the neck and a vertiginous buttonhole made up of 51 small buttons closed by embroidered straps from the base of the skull to the buttocks.
